View Full Version : newbie considering Golf GTI or audi A3
hello guys,
I'm new here. Before I take the plunge to change my car, hope to have some advise from bros here.
Please help me to decide between the 2 models in the subject.
Which one has potential for more power?
Are there any mods i can do for the gti that will not void my warranty?
pleased to hear from the bros here.

Hi Hakim,
I'll let the other gurus help you with the A3.I dont know much about A3 so I'll juz say get the GTI!!! Its a fun car!! And if you mod, sure void warranty. PI will be trying not to fork out too much money on spares after a sale so they'll blame the fault on ur this-n-that mod. Buy from agent, needless to say, do search the forum on what ppl have to say about CnC, be prepared. So... Mod dont scared, scared dont mod. If something breaks down like turbo or what not, go aftermarket la!!
GTI got lotta potential for power upgrade, check out the oetteinger site, they can bring ur GTI up to 300bhp+, that speaks volumes.
Like I said i cant help much on the A3, but decide properly before you buy, maybe u can join us for the GTI meetup, then u ask ard lo, chaps here are friendly!

In short Audi A3 and GTi both use the VW PQ45 platform.
your will be paying a 25-30k premium for the audi generally over the GTI. both have DSG thankfully.
depends on what you want at the end of the day.
what moves your soul most? generally you cant have your cake and eat it too if you know what i mean. so some give and take depending on your choice.
A3 sportsback:
more luxury feel
teutonic legendary build quality
first rate service from PA aftersales
not so 'sporty'
GTI:
better price compared to A3
very good build quality compared to the competition but the A3 still in a class of its own
more raw 'sporty' feel
aftersales from agent.......errr....not quite there basically
both cars are equally 'moddable' due to the fact that they use the same 2.0TFSI engine + DSG. depends on how fast youd like to empty your wallet :-P *grin* our bothers & sisters here can definitely help you!!!
Mod GTI defnitely void warranty. mod audi also definitely void the factory warranty. if i am not wrong, with the PA MTM, you have to sign a disclaimer but should anything go wrong the rectification is taken care of by PA. it is not claimed against the audi factory warranty. so in a sense you have a 'mod warranty' but this only applies to MTM tuning that PA offer as part of aftersales.
to quote a line that i learnt in the 'tiong chia' groove:
"Scared dont mod, Mod dun scared"
welcome to the forum and i hope you enjoy your stay.
please ask anything that youd like to know. but also it would be helpful if you did a search first to see if it has been discussed b4 generally.

CLASSIC!
Hakim, our surgeon has given you the detail, bottomline, looking at both cars, it is a matter of which one your heart prefers and whether you are willing to pay the premium to Premium.
Buy from agent, needless to say, do search the forum on what ppl have to say about CnC, be prepared.
Just to share. I had to replace my cat recently since it died. The whole experience was pleasant I would have to say.
The SA was cool and friendly, he managed my expectation well though I have to wait for 5 weeks for part to arrive.
My sales person was helpful, whenever I am at the service center, never failed to stop and have a chat.
I give credit when credit is due. In this case, the SA tried his best and work within the current crappy situation to deliver good service to me.

hi Hakim! welcome to VAGSG... no matter which car u choose in the end, this is the forum for you!
as for the decision making, that is really up to you since it's your $$$ and your car.... but of u are asking for opinion, i'd say go for the GTI... good bang for buck and lotsa mods out there waiting for u... naturally, the mods will void your warranty... look at it this way, i asked CNC if i can change sparks and K&N filter... they said can... but will void warranty only.... ...amazing huh?
the good news is we have lotsa GTI drivers here and quite a number of them have modded b4.... so there's a wealth of knowledge..... jus join us during the gtgs and meet the folks.. they have lotsa advice to share.... cheers!
Let us know how things go...
PS: btw, sorry, must add that i dun drive GTI.... only drive a 1.6SR
Even after paying the premium for the A3, you will still enjoy less options which come free in the GTI. E.g. sunroof (std unless u dun want it), bi-xenons etc. So you shd consider the specs list as well, not in terms of engine coz they are the same, but the other items like what I mentioned above.
Wow...thanks for all the responses. Probably go the MTM route since its like a "mod warranty" as someone mentioned.
One more question. Can the GTI cruise on NS highway at 200+ non stop? heh...just curiious.
And do you guys have meetups?

just to clarify, this mod warranty only applies to Audi cars bought from PA and MTM done by PA.
So it doesnt apply for VW cars?
